Drinking morning coffee reduces the risk of death by 16% and the risk of cardiovascular death by 31%

Research findings are increasingly showing that drinking coffee is good for health. However, a new study has found that this benefit applies only to morning coffee. This information is based on a paper published on the 8th (local time) in the European Heart Journal by researchers from Tulane University, and it was reported by the health portal WebMD.

According to the research findings, people who drank coffee only in the morning had a lower probability of dying from heart problems compared to those who did not drink coffee. However, among those who drank coffee throughout the day, such health benefits were not observed.

 

The researchers analyzed data from over 40,000 American adults who reported whether they drank coffee, how often, and when they drank it. They found two distinct patterns among coffee drinkers: one group that drank coffee before noon and another that drank coffee throughout the day.

 

As a result of linking the data with 10 years of mortality records, it was found that people who drink morning coffee have a 16% lower risk of death from all causes and a 31% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared to those who do not drink coffee. On the other hand, there was no difference in mortality risk between people who drink coffee all day and those who do not drink coffee.

 

Luchi Director of the Tullain University School of Medicine Obesity Research Center (Epidemiology), the principal investigator of the study, said, "This is the first study to test the timing pattern of coffee consumption and health outcomes." He explained, "According to our research findings, not only whether or how much coffee is consumed, but also the timing of coffee drinking is important." He added, "This study does not identify why drinking coffee in the morning reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease," and suggested that "a possible explanation is that drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening disrupts circadian rhythms and hormone levels such as melatonin, ultimately leading to changes in cardiovascular risk factors like inflammation and blood pressure."

 

The benefits of morning coffee were observed among people who reported drinking a certain amount before noon, but the greatest benefits appeared among those who answered that they drank at least two cups. This recent research finding may be related to the effect of coffee on the sympathetic nervous system, which experts not involved in the study suggested helps the body prepare to act.

 

Dr. Thomas F. Lusensher, a cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital in the UK, who wrote an editorial related to the journal, stated, "In the morning, sympathetic activity generally increases significantly when waking up and getting out of bed, but this effect disappears during the day and reaches its lowest level during sleep." He explained, "As the researchers pointed out, drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening can disrupt the circadian rhythm of sympathetic activity, and in fact, many people who drink alcohol throughout the day experience sleep disorders."
