A story about a Japanese influencer who was bullied because of their appearance and is now living a different life after successfully losing weight has once again become a hot topic.

 

On the 4th of this month (local time), Japanese foreign media outlet Shukan Bunshun ranked the story of cosplay influencer Hiyanikki as the most talked-about article of 2024. Last September, Hiyanikki revealed a story about his appearance, which drew public attention. He stated, "In high school, I was bullied by friends because of my looks," and "After dieting and applying makeup in my twenties, I became a successful influencer." Hiyanikki, who lost weight from 64kg to 54kg, said, "I fasted for 16 hours," and "When I was very hungry, I only ate boiled eggs." He also mentioned, "I never ate bread or pasta, which are wheat-based foods," and explained, "Eating too many carbohydrates can harm my skin, so I cut them out for skin health." After his appearance changed, he said he gained many friends, adding, "I had no friends in middle and high school," and "Now I have confidence and no longer feel uncomfortable talking to others." It is reported that he is currently working at a beauty consulting company, advising people who have complexes about their face or body.

 

Hiyaniqi's bread, pasta, and other wheat-based foods that she stopped eating during her diet are refined carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates are actually easy to cause obesity. Eating foods with a high glycemic index causes a sudden increase in blood sugar, and insulin is also secreted rapidly to regulate it. As a result, blood sugar drops quickly, leading to renewed appetite and potentially overeating. The insulin secreted in the body stores the elevated blood sugar in fat cells, leading to obesity.

 

Refined carbohydrates are closely related to skin health. Consuming a lot of refined carbohydrates increases the level of 'IGF-1,' a factor that promotes sebum production. When this component increases, it can easily trigger skin inflammation, leading to acne and folliculitis. Additionally, the body's resistance to fungi, viruses, and other pathogens decreases, weakening the skin's immune system. In fact, according to a study by the Seoul National University Hospital research team, people without acne tended to consume foods with a low glycemic index, such as green and yellow vegetables and soybeans, while those who sought treatment for acne more frequently consumed refined carbohydrates high in simple sugars, such as hamburgers, donuts, bread, and ramen.

 

However, completely cutting out carbohydrates, which are essential nutrients, is actually bad for health. When carbohydrates are lacking, it is easy to feel tired and lethargic in daily life because there are not enough carbohydrates used as the body's energy source. Additionally, if we consume fewer carbohydrates than needed, our bodies will use more protein. When protein is used up, muscle function weakens, making us feel lethargic. Therefore, it is recommended to consume 45-55% of daily caloric intake from unrefined carbohydrates.

 

Meanwhile, intermittent fasting is a dieting method that limits daily intake to 4 to 12 hours by maintaining a long fasting period. This method has a positive impact on overall health, including metabolism and weight management. It has the advantage of lowering insulin resistance in the body by maintaining fasting for a certain period, and using ketone bodies produced from fat metabolism as an energy source to burn fat.
