Overeating, greasy foods, excessive drinking... As year-end and holiday promises increase, stomach discomfort also tends to rise. Abdominal bloating is a common uncomfortable symptom that often occurs during social gatherings involving alcohol. The feeling of pressure as if the stomach is full usually subsides on its own over time, but if it persists, it could be a sign of digestive issues, hormonal changes, or other problems.

The most common causes of abdominal bloating are overeating, eating too quickly, and gas buildup in the intestines. Fortunately, simply drinking fluids properly can soothe the digestive system, reduce gas, and alleviate discomfort.

The following are six beverages recommended by the American health media outlet Eat This, Not That to help regain a feeling of fullness after overeating.

 

Ginger tea

 

When experiencing abdominal bloating, drinking a warm cup of ginger tea can be helpful. Ginger aids digestion by promoting smooth movement of stomach contents, making it effective in relieving bloating. Additionally, ginger contains 'carminative' compounds that help expel gas from the intestines. Especially when bloating is caused by excessive gas, ginger tea can provide quick relief.


Green tea

 

Green tea is rich in antioxidants and catechins, making it effective in soothing the digestive system and reducing bloating. Catechins help decrease intestinal gases and aid digestion through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Drinking a warm cup of green tea after a meal can help improve digestion and make you feel much lighter.

 

Water

 

The simplest method can be the most effective. Water plays a crucial role in relieving abdominal bloating caused by constipation. When the body lacks sufficient hydration, even the moisture remaining in the food during digestion is absorbed, making the stool hard and difficult to pass. This leads to bacteria in the intestines fermenting and producing gas, which causes bloating. Drinking enough water helps promote smooth intestinal movements, alleviating constipation and removing the cause of bloating.

 

Kombucha

 

Kombucha is a fermented beverage made from tea, sugar, yeast, and bacterial cultures (SCOBY). Although scientific research on the effects of kombucha on bloating is still limited, it is known to be rich in probiotics, which help maintain the balance of gut microbiota. Improving the balance of gut microbiota can lead to smoother digestion and a reduction in bloating.

Additionally, kombucha has a low sugar content in the final beverage because most of the sugar is consumed during the fermentation process. Excessive sugar intake can worsen bloating, so it is important to choose low-sugar drinks.

 

Kefir

 

Although not common among Koreans, kefir is a fermented milk beverage that contains probiotics beneficial for digestion and gut health. The beneficial microorganisms present in this drink help break down food in the intestines and alleviate gas and bloating. According to experts, individuals who consumed probiotic strains found in kefir daily for three weeks showed a tendency for reduced abdominal bloating. Additionally, kefir is effective in balancing gut microbiota, thereby positively impacting overall digestive health.

 

Golden Milk

 

Golden milk is a beverage made by mixing turmeric, milk (or plant-based milk), pepper, ginger, honey, and other ingredients. Turmeric contains an active compound called 'curcumin,' which is effective in alleviating bloating and indigestion symptoms. Ginger also helps promote digestion and remove gas, making golden milk effective in soothing bloating.
