New Year's resolution to diet is good, but😍😍... if overdone, it can lead to 'this disease😱😱'

Many people start exercising with the goal of dieting as the new year approaches. However, excessive exercise driven by overflowing New Year's enthusiasm can lead to other health issues, so caution is advised.

 

Rhabdomyolysis

Excessive muscle exercise beyond one's physical ability can lead to rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which damaged muscles do not supply enough energy, causing necrosis, and toxins enter the circulatory system as a result. These toxins can impair the kidney's filtering function, leading to acute tubular necrosis or renal failure. Symptoms include muscle pain, generalized weakness, and dark-colored urine, which should raise suspicion of rhabdomyolysis. Treatment involves administering fluids to help excrete myoglobin from the kidneys.

 

Hamstring injury

Excessive squatting to strengthen the lower body muscles can lead to hamstring injuries. The hamstring refers to the muscles at the back of the thigh, including the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. It is also a common injury site for soccer and baseball players. If during exercise you hear a 'pop' sound followed by a sharp pain at the back of the thigh, you should suspect a hamstring injury. At this point, immediately apply ice and visit a hospital to receive anti-inflammatory painkillers, physical therapy, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, and other treatments.

 

Rotator cuff tear

Excessive exercise that uses the shoulders can cause rotator cuff tears, which involve tearing of the shoulder tendons. Especially when the shoulder tendons weaken due to aging, overexertion during activities like swimming can easily cause tears. If you experience a tingling sensation in the shoulder when raising your arm overhead, it may indicate a rotator cuff tear. If only a minor tear occurs, treatment options include medication, physical therapy, and injections. If symptoms do not improve, reconstructive surgery to reattach the torn tendon may be considered.

 

◇Hernia

Lifting heavy objects or performing exercises that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as sit-ups, can increase the risk of hernia if done excessively. A hernia refers to a condition where an organ that should be in its normal position protrudes or escapes to another area. It is common for the intestines to protrude through a hole in the abdominal wall that supports the internal organs. When standing and exerting pressure on the abdomen, swelling around the groin or navel that bulges like a small balloon, or that can be pushed back into the abdomen, may indicate a hernia. Hernias must be treated with surgery, and delayed treatment can lead to the loss of blood supply to the intestines, causing necrosis, so caution is necessary.

 

Meanwhile, exercise should be performed at a moderate intensity to be effective while reducing the risk of injury. Moderate-intensity exercise is characterized by sweating appropriately and no pain in the joints. If there is aching pain in the joints during or after exercise, it is advisable to stop that activity. If joint pain or muscle soreness persists for more than 48 hours, it indicates overexertion.
