Sometimes, there is no need to change your entire diet for healthy eating habits. Simply replacing your usual foods with different ones can still allow you to enjoy your favorite foods while increasing nutrition and reducing calorie intake. Here are some foods that are good to swap for healthier options, as introduced by the U.S. health information media 'Eat This, Not That.'

Plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit instead of sweetened yogurt

 

Sweetened yogurt often has a high sugar content and usually lacks protein. Instead of sweetened yogurt, choose plain yogurt and add fresh fruit for sweetness. This way, you can increase your protein intake while reducing calories, resulting in a nutritious and filling breakfast.

 

Oatmeal instead of cereal loaded with sugar

 

Commercially sold cereals tend to have high sugar content and lack nutrients such as protein and fiber. As a result, blood sugar levels often spike rapidly while satiety is short-lived. In contrast, oatmeal is rich in fiber, particularly beta-glucan, which has been shown to promote longer-lasting fullness. Adding fresh fruits or nuts can further enhance its nutritional value.


△Whole grain bread instead of white bread

 

White bread is a food with low nutritional value but high in empty calories, whereas whole grain bread is rich in fiber, vitamin B, and protein, helping to add essential nutrients to the diet and maintain a feeling of fullness for a longer period.

 

Sparkling water with added fruit instead of sugary drinks

 

Sugary carbonated drinks or fruit juices can quickly increase calorie and sugar intake, raising the risk of weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease. Replacing soda with sparkling water infused with fresh fruit lowers calories and reduces added sugar intake while still enjoying a fizzy taste. Replace high-calorie mayonnaise with chickpea hummus or avocado. This reduces calories while increasing fiber and nutrients, allowing for immediate diet improvement. Hummus contains about 70 calories per 2 tablespoons, with 2g of protein and 2g of fiber. Mashed avocado provides about 46 calories per 2 tablespoons, with 2g of fiber and 4g of heart-healthy fats.

 

Roasted chickpeas instead of potato chips

 

Potato chips are high in fat and calories but have almost no nutritional value. If you want to increase fiber and protein with fewer calories, try eating roasted chickpeas. You can enjoy a crispy snack while helping to maintain your diet goals.

 

△Cottage cheese instead of cream cheese

 

Fat-free cottage cheese has a high protein content and low calories and fat. About 13 calories per 2 tablespoons, compared to 80 calories in cream cheese. Therefore, it is an excellent alternative to cream cheese for bagels or sauces.
