Ministry of Health and Welfare, Implementation of Health Warning Images and Texts on Cigarette Packs for the 5th Term

Starting today (the 23rd), the images and messages on the front of cigarette packs will be updated. These changes will be in effect for the next two years, featuring more impactful designs to make the harmful effects of smoking more immediately recognizable.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced today (23rd) that the revised health warning images and messages on cigarette packs, announced in June as part of the 5th phase, will be implemented starting today.

The cigarette pack images have been changing every two years since they were first introduced domestically on December 23, 2016. The new cigarette pack image has also been scheduled to be applied for two years.

The Ministry of Health explained that the decision regarding the cigarette pack images was made by comprehensively considering domestic and international research results and case analyses, nationwide sample surveys, and the effectiveness of health warnings.

In particular, it was added that pictures and phrases were selected by comprehensively considering visibility and meaning to clearly raise awareness of the health hazards caused by various tobacco products, including cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.
