It's natural to have eye boogers when you wake up in the morning. Blinking helps flush out waste products like mucus and oil, but when you sleep, you don't blink, allowing waste products to accumulate. However, If the color and shape of eye boogers change, you should suspect an eye disease.

The most common cause of excessive eye discharge is dry eye. Sleeping in a dry environment or being fatigued can lead to a lack of tears, which prevents waste products from being washed away and causes them to accumulate, forming eye discharge. In dry eye, the clear discharge becomes long and stringy.

Wiping eye discharge can sometimes cause it to stretch. In this case, artificial tears should be used. For severe cases, use gel or ointment-type artificial tears.

 

If you have a lot of yellow eye discharge, it could be bacterial conjunctivitis or keratitis. The discharge turns yellow due to pus or inflammation caused by bacteria.

 

If clear discharge is dripping from your eyes, it could be viral conjunctivitis. Unlike bacteria, viruses don't produce pus, so their discharge tends to be clear.


If you have a lot of opaque, white discharge, it could be blepharitis. Blepharitis occurs when the oil glands that secrete oil into the eye become blocked and inflamed. This causes small, crumbly, white specks of discharge to accumulate at the entrances of the glands. The eyelid edges may also become red.

 

If your eye discharge is yellow or opaque white, if it is difficult to open your eyes because of the discharge, if your vision is impaired due to the discharge, or if your eyes are red, swollen, and painful, you must see an ophthalmologist.

 

If you have excessive eye discharge, applying a compress can help. If you suffer from itchy, allergic conjunctivitis or a burning, painful dry eye, try a cold compress. Wrap ice in a towel and place it over your eyes.

 

For symptoms like blepharitis, conjunctivitis, or dry eye without a burning or painful sensation, try a warm compress. Soak a towel in not-too-hot water and place it over your eyes for 5-10 minutes, two to three times a day.
