"Indoor fine dust, generated during cooking"... What is the worst cooking tool in the kitchen?

One of the main factors generating fine dust inside the house is cooking. At this time, it has been found that air fryers can help reduce indoor fine dust and improve the air quality in the home. [Photo = Getty Images Bank]

Exposure to fine dust particles has serious health effects, including increased risk of respiratory diseases, heart disease, and premature death. One of the main indoor sources of fine dust is cooking.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham in the UK measured fine dust and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated during the cooking of chicken breasts using five common methods (pan-frying, stir-frying, deep-frying, boiling, and air frying). 💥 Fine dust is associated with lung diseases, heart attacks, and premature death, while VOCs can cause respiratory complications, headaches, and damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.

According to the research results, the worst cooking method for fine dust was pan-frying, reaching a maximum concentration of 92.9 micrograms per cubic meter of air. Stir-frying was 26.7, deep-frying was 7.7, boiling was 0.7, and air frying was 0.6.

The best method for VOCs was measured at 20 ppb (parts per billion) using an air fryer. Next was boiling at 30 ppb, stir-frying at 110 ppb, deep-frying at 230 ppb, and pan-frying at 260 ppb.

In particular, these figures did not disappear after reaching their peak. The pollutant levels remained quite high in the kitchen for over an hour after cooking food. The study's lead author, Professor Christian Frank, stated, "Switching from pan-frying and stir-frying to an air fryer significantly reduces indoor air pollutant exposure."

One of the factors that reduces contamination in an air fryer is its design. Dr. Delphine Palmer, an assistant professor of chemistry at Colorado State University, explained, "Since air fryers are generally sealed systems, heating oil produces particles, but most of these particles seem to accumulate inside the air fryer before escaping into the air." She added, "In contrast, frying, stirring, and deep-frying all involve oil pools exposed to the air, which release more particles."

Honestly, air fryers are convenient, but

Cleaning is quite cumbersome, so I don't use it very often.ㅠㅠ It's unfortunate that a frying pan is considered the worst cooking toolㅠㅠ I use it the most frequently... I need to ensure good ventilation and always turn on the kitchen hood to minimize kitchen dust.
