Research has shown that the brain experiences three 'aging peaks' throughout a lifetime. According to a study published in Nature Aging, the levels of 13 proteins related to brain aging sharply increase at ages 57, 70, and 78.

According to research, the brain experiences three 'aging peaks' throughout a lifetime.

Researchers at Zhengzhou University First Hospital in China analyzed MRI brain scans of 11,000 individuals aged 45 to 82. They examined specific physiological features such as brain volume and surface area, and compared the brain age to the actual age to assess the degree of brain aging. Then, they evaluated the concentrations of approximately 3,000 proteins in the blood of about 5,000 participants. Since blood connects the brain to the rest of the body, changes in protein concentrations in the blood should reflect similar changes in the brain.

 

Overall, 13 proteins significantly associated with biological brain age were identified in relation to blood concentration.

 

Research results showed that proteins associated with aging, such as cell stress and inflammation, increased in the blood as biological brain age advanced. Conversely, the levels of proteins that help maintain brain function, including those related to cell regeneration, decreased with age.

 

Among the proteins discovered by the researchers, the protein known as brevican showed the strongest correlation with biological brain age. This protein's concentration decreases with age, and a reduction in its level was strongly associated with diseases such as dementia and stroke. The concentrations of 13 proteins, including brevican, peaked in blood samples taken at specific ages of 57, 70, and 78 years.

 

The researchers stated, "The research results show that the onset of brain aging begins in the late 50s, and that the ages of 70 and late 70s are critical points in brain aging," and added, "This suggests that interventions that help certain age groups maintain brain health longer could be important."
