According to a survey by the Korea Consumer Agency, the average calorie per serving of fish cake is only about 7.5% of the daily energy requirement. The fat content is also low, at 6.9% of the recommended daily intake. However, the protein content is high, at 18.9% of the recommended daily intake.

However, a high sodium content can cause the body to swell if consumed excessively. Consuming a lot of sodium causes water to accumulate inside the cells, leading to swelling.

Eating just one piece (100g) of fish cake results in an intake of 787.7mg of sodium, which accounts for 33.7% of the recommended daily sodium intake. Some products have even higher sodium content, and consuming just one fish cake can provide 1226mg of sodium, which is 61.3% of the daily recommended amount.

When buying and eating fish cake on the street, it is better to consume less broth. Not dipping it in soy sauce is also a way to reduce sodium intake. When preparing fish cake at home, boiling it in hot water to remove surface oil and food additives can help lower the sodium content.

It is good to consume potassium-rich foods after eating fish cake. Potassium helps to eliminate sodium from the body. Vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, cucumber, and cabbage, as well as fruits like bananas and tomatoes, are high in potassium.

Not only fish cake, but also tangerines, fish-shaped bread, and egg bread, which are popular winter snacks, require caution. Tangerines contain about 40 kcal each, so eating just 3.5 of them provides the same amount of calories as half a bowl of rice.

The Korean Nutrition Society recommends a single tangerine as one serving. Fish-shaped bread contains 100 to 120 kcal per piece, and eating just three is similar in calories to a bowl of rice. Egg bread also has a high calorie content, so it is advisable to eat it in moderation.
