(Parkinson's Disease) If this movement is difficult, consider suspicion
If this movement doesn't work well, consider Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease is a degenerative brain disorder characterized by motor impairments caused by damage to dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. Approximately 5,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, but the exact cause has not yet been fully identified. Professor Jung stated, "Although multiple causes have been proposed, none have been definitively proven." While Alzheimer's dementia primarily presents with cognitive impairments, Parkinson's disease differs in that it involves the occurrence of motor impairments.
The most characteristic feature of Parkinson's disease is 'bradykinesia.' Overall movements such as handwriting and walking slow down, and the voice becomes quieter. Professor Jung explained, "When performing the task of attaching and detaching the thumb and index finger, if the movements gradually become smaller or become hesitant, it indicates bradykinesia," and "if there are hand tremors and rigidity, a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is made." REM sleep behavior disorder is also a typical symptom. REM sleep is a stage where dreaming occurs along with muscle relaxation, but patients with behavioral disorders act out their dreams. Violent sleep talking can be an early sign of Parkinson's disease.
There is no established treatment for Parkinson's disease. So far, the most representative method is administering dopamine, specifically 'levodopa.' It is taken orally, absorbed in the intestines, and then crosses the blood-brain barrier to release dopamine. Professor Jeong said, "There is a period of about 3 to 4 years when symptoms are well controlled with medication," and "after that, as the disease progresses, the medication becomes less effective."
Exercise is the most important for preventing Parkinson's disease. Activities such as swimming, running, and cycling at a certain intensity are necessary. A Mediterranean diet that mainly includes fish for protein and incorporates fruits and vegetables is also recommended.
