Maple syrup is made by concentrating the sap from maple trees, which are mainly found in Quebec, Canada. Known as a natural sweetener along with honey, a Canadian study found that maple syrup is more effective than alternative sweeteners in lowering blood sugar and reducing abdominal fat.
A research team at the Heart and Lung Institute of Laval University School of Medicine in Quebec, Canada, had 42 adults aged 18 to 75 with a BMI (body mass index) of 23 to 40 kg/m² replace refined sugar for 8 weeks by having them consume 2 tablespoons of maple syrup for 4 weeks and 2 tablespoons of an alternative sweetener syrup (sucralose syrup) for 4 weeks. As a result, when they consumed maple syrup, their blood sugar level 2 hours after eating was 30 mg/dL lower than when they consumed the alternative sweetener syrup, and the rate of abdominal fat reduction was 9% higher.
"This is because maple syrup contains over 100 natural compounds, including polyphenols," said Dr. André Maret of the Heart and Lung Institute at Laval University's Faculty of Medicine in Quebec, Canada. "Polyphenols enhance fat-burning ability, which helps with weight loss." He continued, "Polyphenols reduce insulin resistance, improve blood vessel wall function, and help regulate blood sugar levels."
Maple syrup is rich in polyphenols as well as the three essential minerals potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which slow down the growth of cancer cells. It's also rich in zinc and manganese. Zinc helps maintain white blood cell counts and boost immunity. Manganese plays a crucial role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption, blood sugar regulation, and brain and nerve function. However, maple syrup is high in sugar, so consuming too much can lead to various health problems. Diabetics, in particular, should be cautious, as excessive maple syrup consumption can alter blood sugar and insulin levels, potentially leading to complications.
