Carrying heavy shopping bags or climbing stairs for a short period of time, such as a few minutes of brief and intense exercise, can reduce women's risk of heart attack.
According to a research team at the University of Sydney in Australia, for women who do not like or cannot do structured exercise at gyms or fitness centers, everyday physical activity has been found to be a good choice for heart health.
The research team conducted a study on over 22,000 British men and women aged 40 to 79. The participants were individuals who did not exercise regularly.
The research team had participants wear activity trackers to monitor their activity levels. The participants' health status was reviewed through hospital and mortality records tracking major cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.
As a result, middle-aged women who engage in an average of 3.4 minutes of high-intensity physical activity per day in their daily lives experienced a 45% reduction in the likelihood of major cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, compared to women who do not engage in any high-intensity physical activity, their risk of heart attack was 51% lower, and their risk of heart failure was 67% lower.
In particular, just 1 minute and 30 seconds of intense physical activity daily was found to reduce the risk of heart attack by about 33% and the risk of heart failure by 40%. The research team explained, "This is important because women tend to have lower levels of cardiopulmonary health compared to men."
Dr. Emmanuel Stamatakis of the research team stated, "Habitual intense physical activity over a short period may be a promising option for women who do not like or cannot engage in structured exercise."
He said, "Engaging in high-intensity activities for a few minutes in daily life, such as climbing stairs, shopping, or walking uphill, is beneficial," and added, "The results of this study show that even slightly more intense activities can be helpful and may assist people in establishing regular physical activity or exercise habits."
Meanwhile, men who engaged in an average of 5.6 minutes of high-intensity physical activity daily were found to have only a 16% lower probability of developing major cardiovascular diseases compared to men who did not engage in any. For men, at least 2.3 minutes of high-intensity physical activity per day resulted in only an 11% reduction in cardiovascular disease risk.
