[Health Consumer] The seasonal transition is a time when rapid changes in temperature and humidity can lead to various health problems. Allergic rhinitis, in particular, is one of the most common ailments during this transition. Airborne allergens like pollen, fine dust, and dust mites are the primary triggers of allergies.

■What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease caused by an overreaction to specific allergens. Symptoms can worsen during seasonal changes, particularly due to increased concentrations of external environmental factors, such as pollen and fine dust. When these substances come into contact with the nasal mucosa, an immune response is triggered, resulting in symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes.

■Main causes of allergic rhinitis

1. Pollen: Pollen, which occurs primarily in spring and fall, is one of the main causes of allergic rhinitis. Because it's easily dispersed through the air by the wind, it's easy to inhale when outdoors.

2. Fine dust and air pollution: Fine dust floating in the air irritates the nasal mucosa, triggering allergic symptoms. On days with high fine dust concentrations, allergic rhinitis symptoms can worsen.

3. Dust mites: Indoor dust and mites are common indoor triggers for allergic reactions. Failure to maintain indoor air quality can exacerbate symptoms.

■Symptoms of allergic rhinitis

1. Sneezing: Sudden and persistent sneezing is a typical symptom of allergic rhinitis.

2. Runny nose and stuffy nose: If you have allergic rhinitis, you will have a persistent runny nose and the nasal mucosa may swell, which may lead to nasal congestion.

3. Itchy eyes: Many people with allergic rhinitis experience itchy or bloodshot eyes.

How to prevent and manage allergic rhinitis

1. Indoor Air Quality Management: Managing indoor air quality is important. Use an air purifier or ventilate frequently to reduce dust mites and fine dust levels.

2. Wash your face and shower after going out: When going out, allergens can stick to your skin, clothes, and hair and enter the room, so it is recommended to wash your face and shower immediately after going out.

3. Consultation with a doctor and medication: If allergic rhinitis symptoms persist or significantly interfere with daily life, consult a doctor and consider medications such as antihistamines or nasal sprays. Preventative medications can also help alleviate seasonal symptoms.
