Snacks chosen for health reasons can actually increase sugar intake, stacking up calories and threatening blood sugar and weight. What could be the reason?

 

◇Nut mix Nut mixes are snacks that combine nuts and dried fruit. Dried fruit is high in calories and less filling than fresh fruit, so it's easy to accidentally overeat. When fruit is dried, the moisture evaporates, increasing its sweetness and calories. Adding sugar or other ingredients during processing can increase the calorie count by five to ten times. While a raw banana contains 90 calories per 100g, dried bananas increase the calorie count to 480 calories per 100g. It's best to choose products that don't contain dried fruit and come in small, "handful" portions.

However, they're a different story when coated with honey, sugar, or salt. Salty or sweet nuts can raise blood sugar levels and lead to weight gain. For added flavor, consider adding cinnamon powder or lightly roasting them in olive oil.
