How much water should you drink? The American Dietetic Association recommends that men consume 100 ounces (about 12.5 cups, 3.1 liters) of fluids per day, and women 73 ounces (about 9 cups, 2.1 liters). However, this figure is only a starting point. Your fluid needs will vary depending on several factors, including activity level, metabolism, diet, and calorie intake.

 

Factors that determine water intake

Dr. Sadia Hussain, a family medicine physician at the Cleveland Clinic, says four key factors to consider when determining your water intake are your activity level, your latitude or equator, your metabolism, and your body size. For example, if you engage in a lot of sweaty activities, you should drink more water. If you live in a hot climate or at a high altitude, you may lose more fluids and need to increase your water intake. Furthermore, a faster metabolism may require more water, and the larger you are, the more water you need.

 

How to drink water properly

Water is essential for optimal bodily function. Our bodies are composed of over 60% water, and water plays a crucial role in improving blood circulation, aiding digestion, and maintaining joint health. Furthermore, sufficient water intake prevents kidney damage, protects skin, and has a positive impact on dental health.

The easiest way to check dehydration is to check the color of your urine. If your urine is pale yellow, you're well hydrated, but if it's darker or has a strong odor, you need more fluids.

 

A glass of water as soon as you wake up in the morning = Drinking water first thing after waking up will help replenish any fluids lost overnight and boost your metabolism.

 

Drink regularly It's easy to forget to drink water in our busy lives. It's a good idea to set up a reminder on your phone to help you develop a consistent water drinking habit.

 

Drink water before and after meals = Drinking water before or after a meal helps digestion and maintains water balance in the body.

 

Add flavor to water If you find drinking just water boring, try adding natural flavors like lemon, cucumber, or mint. You can enjoy delicious, refreshing water without the calories.

 

Use a portable water bottle For easy access to water anytime, anywhere, we recommend carrying a portable water bottle. This will help you maintain a steady water intake even at work, on the go, or while exercising.

 

Record your water intake = Keep a record of how much water you drink each day. This can help you see if you're meeting your hydration goals.
