There's a saying, "An apple in the morning is golden, an apple in the evening is poisonous." Apples are certainly known for their health benefits, but is it really wrong to eat them in the evening? Let's explore the nutritional benefits of apples and the differences between eating them in the morning and evening.

 

◇Various benefits, including prevention of aging, heart disease, and stroke

 

Many compounds in apples have beneficial effects on the human body. First, quercetin, found in apples, reduces the risk of aging. This ingredient not only prevents skin aging but also prevents the body from weakening as we age. Furthermore, the antioxidant flavan-3-ol found in apples helps maintain heart health.

 

This flavonol, a type of flavonol, lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. In fact, a joint research team from the US and the UK analyzed 157 clinical trials and 15 studies and found that eating one apple daily, equivalent to 400-600 mg of flavan-3-ols, helped improve heart health and prevent stroke. Apples are also good to eat when you're feeling tired, as their abundant vitamin C boosts the body's immune system and helps relieve fatigue.


It's best to wash apples thoroughly and eat them with the skin. Apple peels are rich in pectin, a dietary fiber that helps prevent constipation. Pectin promotes the growth of lactic acid bacteria in the intestines, which then helps eliminate harmful substances through stool. Pectin also helps prevent diabetes by absorbing carbohydrates. Apples are also effective for weight loss. According to a study at Pennsylvania State University, those who chewed apples consumed about 15% less calories. Apple peels also contain anthocyanins, which have antioxidant properties.

 

◇If your digestion is smooth, you can eat it in the evening.

 

Despite being packed with nutrients, the reason apples aren't recommended for dinner is related to digestive health. This is due to the soluble fiber, pectin, found in apple skins. Eating an apple rich in pectin after breakfast stimulates the intestines, making bowel movements easier. However, increased bowel movements at night can actually disrupt sleep.

 

This is because undigested dietary fiber produces gas while you sleep, leaving you feeling bloated after waking up. Furthermore, the organic acids in apples increase stomach acidity, so eating an apple before bed can worsen heartburn while you're lying down.

 

To fully enjoy the benefits of apples, it's best to eat them in the morning. However, if you have a healthy digestive system and a healthy stomach, eating one or two slices in the evening should be fine.
