There is a saying that "an apple eaten in the morning is a golden apple, and an apple eaten in the evening is a poisonous apple." Apples are well known as a healthy food, but is it really bad to eat them in the evening? We will explore the nutritional benefits of apples and the differences between eating them in the morning and in the evening.

 

◇Various benefits including prevention of frailty, heart disease, and stroke

 

Many components inside apples have beneficial effects on the human body. First, the 'quercetin' contained in apples reduces the risk of aging. This ingredient not only prevents skin aging but also helps prevent the body from weakening as it gets older. Additionally, the antioxidant component called 'flavan-3-ol' in apples helps maintain heart health.

 

This component, a type of flavanol, lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. In fact, a joint study by American and British research teams analyzing 157 clinical trials and 15 studies found that eating one apple containing 400-600mg of flavan-3-ol daily helps prevent strokes as well as improve heart health. Apples are also good to eat when tired because the abundant vitamin C in apples strengthens the body's immune function and helps relieve fatigue.


It is good to wash apples thoroughly and eat them with the skin. Apple skin is rich in dietary fiber called pectin, which is good for preventing constipation. Pectin helps produce a lot of beneficial bacteria in the intestines and then expels harmful substances from the body through stool. The pectin component absorbs sugars and also helps prevent diabetes. Apples are also effective for weight loss. According to a study by Pennsylvania State University in the United States, the group that chewed and ate apples reduced their calorie intake by about 15%. Additionally, apple skin contains anthocyanins, which have antioxidant effects.

 

◇If your digestive function is smooth, you can eat in the evening.

 

The saying that eating a nutritious apple at night is not good is related to digestive function. It is due to pectin, a soluble dietary fiber found in apple skins. Eating apples rich in pectin after breakfast stimulates the intestines, making bowel movements easier and beneficial. However, if intestinal activity becomes active at night, it can actually interfere with restful sleep.

 

Undigested dietary fiber creates gas while sleeping, making the stomach feel bloated even after waking up in the morning. Additionally, organic acids in apples increase stomach acidity, so eating an apple before bed can cause severe heartburn while lying down.

 

To fully enjoy the benefits of apples, it is best to eat them preferably in the morning. However, for people with smooth digestion and a healthy stomach, eating one or two slices in the evening is not a major problem.
