Some people eat pork lard, removing only the fat from the pork, for health reasons. While it's true that lard is a fatty substance, that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad for you. Surprisingly, lard possesses a variety of nutritional values. Let's explore its nutritional value and precautions when consuming it.

 

Rich in Vitamin F… Promotes hair growth and normalizes skin cells

 

Pork lard is rich in vitamin F. Vitamin F refers to alpha-linulenic acid and linulenic acid, unsaturated fatty acids that form the brain's nervous system. Approximately 57% of lard is comprised of unsaturated fatty acids, a higher percentage than beef tallow, which contains about 47% unsaturated fatty acids. A deficiency of unsaturated fatty acids in the body can lead to inflammation and problems with hair growth and skin cells.


◇Pork fat can also lower blood heavy metal levels.

 

Although controversial, research suggests that pork lard helps detoxify heavy metals. The Korea Food Research Institute examined the blood heavy metal concentrations of factory workers who ate pork two to three times a week for six weeks. Lead levels decreased by approximately 2% and cadmium levels decreased by approximately 8% before and after pork consumption.

 

◇Do not overdo it, even if you eat it, only once or twice a week

 

Even pork lard, rich in beneficial nutrients, can be toxic if consumed in excess. While approximately 57% of lard is unsaturated fatty acids, the remaining 38% is saturated fatty acids. This can lead to elevated blood cholesterol levels, potentially exacerbating vascular diseases like high blood pressure. Pork belly, which is rich in lard, should be eaten no more than once or twice a week. If you feel like you're lacking in fat, opt for leaner cuts like sirloin, tenderloin, or hind leg.
