When the body lacks certain nutrients, various signs can appear on the face. Changes in the eyes, lips, and skin can occur not only when there's an abnormality in an organ, but also when there's a deficiency in various vitamins. What are some of the symptoms?

 

Vitamin A deficiency - dry eyes, bloodshot eyes Vitamin A is involved in vision, cell growth, and immunity. Therefore, vitamin A deficiency can cause dry eye, night blindness, and other eye diseases. When vitamin A deficiency impairs eye cell function, tears do not secrete properly, and the mucous membrane dries out or hardens. Blinking when the mucous membrane is dry can irritate the eye, increasing the risk of redness. In severe cases, dead tissue may accumulate on the mucous membrane, appearing as spots. In these cases, it is recommended to eat foods rich in vitamin A, such as carrots, cassia seeds, old pumpkin, and cherry tomatoes.

◇Vitamin B2 deficiency - angular cheilitis, erythema around the mouth Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is necessary for metabolic processes such as skin regeneration, and it also participates in antioxidant activity. Therefore, a vitamin B2 deficiency can cause metabolic problems in the body, resulting in redness and swelling around the mouth, or angular cheilitis, which causes cracks and sores around the mouth. Vitamin B2 deficiency is common in vegetarians and growing children who consume a lot of vitamins. Because vitamin B2 is not synthesized or stored in the body, it must be adequately supplemented through food or supplements. Foods rich in vitamin B2 include milk, cheese, eggs, cheonggukjang, and spinach.

 

Vitamin B6 deficiency - dry and itchy skin Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), which is involved in protein metabolism and the synthesis of hemoglobin and neurotransmitters, causes dryness in the body. This can lead to cracks in the lips and around the mouth. Since vitamin B6 also plays a role in collagen synthesis, a deficiency can cause itching and rashes. Vitamin B6 is mainly stored in animal muscles. It can be consumed through meat, poultry, and fish, and consuming milk, bananas, nuts, corn, sunflower seeds, beans, spinach, and carrots is also helpful.

 

Vitamin B7 deficiency - Hair and nails do not grow well and hair loss occurs. Vitamin B7 (biotin) aids in protein metabolism. A vitamin B7 deficiency can lead to poor hair and nail growth and hair loss. Vitamin B7 is abundant in egg yolks, beans, nuts, mushrooms, and animal liver. However, raw egg whites contain avidin, which can interfere with vitamin B7 absorption. Therefore, if you're concerned about vitamin B7 deficiency, cook your eggs before eating. Furthermore, because vitamin B7 is synthesized by intestinal bacteria, long-term antibiotic use should be avoided.
