Drinking four cups of coffee increases the risk of stroke by 37%.
Blended Black Tea and Earl Grey Tea Reduce Stroke Risk
A new study has found that heavy coffee consumption increases the risk of stroke. According to data published in the Journal of Stroke, a joint study by the University of Galway in Ireland and McMaster University in Canada, drinking four or more cups of coffee per day increases the risk of stroke by 37%.
Stroke is a disease that occurs when the cerebral or carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain become blocked or ruptured, disrupting blood flow and damaging brain cells, resulting in neurological symptoms. A stroke can cause the loss of 1.9 million nerve cells per minute and 120 million nerve cells per hour.
South Korea is also one of the countries experiencing a rapid increase in stroke patients. According to the National Disease Statistics, the number of stroke patients has increased slightly each year, from 607,862 in 2020 to 653,409 last year. If the previous study's findings are accurate, increased coffee consumption could have had a negative impact. Last year, Korean adults consumed 405 cups of coffee per year, far exceeding the global average of 152 cups.
The researchers found that, in contrast to coffee, drinking tea reduced the risk of stroke by 18-20%. They added that the risk of stroke was nearly 30% lower when drinking teas like Earl Grey and English Breakfast (a blended black tea made from Assam and Ceylon teas) rather than green or herbal teas.
“You can reduce your risk of stroke by making healthy lifestyle choices, including diet and physical activity in your daily life,” said Martin O’Donnell, chief medical officer at University Hospital Galway.
