Actress Moon Geun-young (37) has revealed her health condition.

On the morning of the 21st, Moon Geun-young attended the production presentation of the Netflix series 'Hell 2' held at JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul. During the presentation, Moon Geun-young mentioned her health status, saying, "More people than I expected have been worried about my health," and "I am now fully recovered and in very good health." She added, "Although I have gained a little weight, I am currently on a diet watching daily 'pack punch' videos," and "I hope everyone will now cheer for my successful diet instead of worrying about my health." In February 2017, Moon Geun-young suddenly complained of pain in her right arm. As a result, she was diagnosed with 'acute compartment syndrome' and underwent surgery four times. Acute compartment syndrome is an emergency condition where blood flow through muscles and nerve tissues decreases below a certain level, causing continuous increase in pressure within the compartment. Here is an overview of the acute compartment syndrome experienced by Moon Geun-young.

People suffering from acute compartment syndrome may experience impaired blood circulation within the fascia surrounding the muscles, which can lead to muscle and nerve necrosis. When acute compartment syndrome occurs, the affected area may lose sensation, and the pain can be so severe that it causes screams when moved. According to the Journal of the Korean Society of Fracture, acute compartment syndrome is an orthopedic emergency that requires immediate surgical treatment. Delayed surgery can result in muscle necrosis, muscle contracture, nerve damage, amputation, kidney dysfunction, and even death.

Acute compartment syndrome can occur when a person experiences trauma or maintains the same position for several hours, compressing the arm or leg. The first report of this condition in the academic community was in 1881, when a patient who had a cast applied after trauma suffered muscle and nerve necrosis due to excessively tight bandages or plaster, leading to the diagnosis of acute compartment syndrome.

Acute compartment syndrome occurs after severe trauma, characterized by intense pain that does not subside even with rest. Therefore, emergency surgery is absolutely necessary. The treatment for acute compartment syndrome involves incising the fascia to allow the trapped blood, which cannot flow properly from the inside, to escape outward. This prevents muscle necrosis. Since the fascia is incised, the area must be sutured or skin grafted, with the recovery period for suturing being approximately 2 to 3 weeks. If surgery is performed at the appropriate time, about 68% of patients can regain normal function. If fasciotomy is performed more than 12 hours after the onset of acute compartment syndrome, only about 8% of patients recover normal function.
