6 Exercises for Hemorrhoids

6 Exercises for Hemorrhoids

Heeee's story reviewing a healthy life

I'll tell you 6 exercises that are good for hemorrhoids, as well as exercises and postures to avoid.
  • Regular exercise can help prevent or manage hemorrhoids by improving digestion, strengthening muscles, and increasing blood circulation.

  • The best exercises for hemorrhoids include low-impact activities such as walking or yoga.

  • High-intensity exercise, such as weight training, can worsen hemorrhoids by increasing pressure on the abdomen or rectum.

Regular exercise is essential for health and well-being. However, exercising with hemorrhoids can be uncomfortable. Swollen blood vessels in and around the anus and rectum can cause itching, bleeding, and discomfort.

Certain exercises, such as heavy weight lifting, can worsen hemorrhoids because they strain the hemorrhoids or put direct pressure on the rectal area. However, aerobic exercise and flexibility exercises can help treat or prevent hemorrhoids.

Here's what you need to know about the best exercises for hemorrhoids and which ones to avoid while healing.

What exercises are good for hemorrhoids?

I'll tell you 6 exercises that are good for hemorrhoids, as well as exercises and postures to avoid.

Many adults will develop hemorrhoids at some point in their lives. Moderate, low-impact exercise is one of several lifestyle changes that can improve symptoms. Consider the following exercises for hemorrhoids.

  1. walking

Walking offers numerous benefits for both physical and mental health. It can improve heart health, boost mood, and improve sleep quality. It may also help manage hemorrhoids. Low-impact aerobic exercise has been shown to increase blood circulation and support digestion. A healthy digestive system, including regular, pain-free bowel movements, can help prevent or alleviate hemorrhoids.

For example, walking after a meal can promote digestion. And research suggests that regular exercise, like walking, can help prevent or relieve constipation, one of the most common causes of hemorrhoids.

Adults are recommended to engage in 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week. Walking can help you stay active and reach your goals. This is good news, as inactivity is a risk factor for hemorrhoids.

Try scheduling a brisk 20-30 minute walk several times a week. Or, take a 10-minute walk after every meal.

2. Swimming

Swimming is another low-impact aerobic exercise that can help relieve hemorrhoid symptoms. The buoyancy of water counteracts your weight, making it easier to move through the water than on land. Swimming in warm water also helps relax your muscles.

And because swimming is a non-weight-bearing exercise, it places minimal pressure on the pelvic area. This is crucial, as increased pelvic pressure can cause the veins in the rectum and anus to swell. This swelling can cause or worsen hemorrhoids.

Swimming also increases blood circulation, keeping blood vessels healthy. It's a full-body workout that strengthens muscles and burns calories, helping with weight management. Weight gain is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhoids. Therefore, maintaining a comfortable weight, which varies from person to person, can help prevent hemorrhoids.

Try beginner-friendly swimming exercises a few times a week. If you're not an experienced swimmer, you can also try water aerobics.

When exercising to drink water, be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • It retains moisture.

  • Wear comfortable swimsuits that are not too tight.

  • After swimming, gently pat the area dry to prevent irritating hemorrhoids.

  • Shower after swimming.

  • If you experience symptoms such as bleeding or severe pain, avoid swimming until the hemorrhoids heal.

3. Yoga

People practice yoga for a variety of reasons, from increased flexibility to improved sleep quality. This popular practice may also alleviate hemorrhoid symptoms. It includes low-impact poses that help strengthen the core, including the pelvic floor muscles. A strong pelvic floor supports the bladder and bowels, keeping these organs in place and functioning properly.

Some studies suggest that yoga can relieve constipation and improve digestion. However, more research is needed to determine its effect on gas, bloating, and other gastrointestinal (GI) issues.

Yoga also includes breathing exercises and meditation. These practices promote mind-body awareness and can reduce stress. Research has shown a link between stress and gastrointestinal problems, including constipation. Finding healthy ways to manage stress can help prevent hemorrhoids.

4. Kegel exercises

Kegel exercises have been shown to reduce hemorrhoid symptoms. These exercises contract the pelvic floor muscles, forming a hammock-like structure in the pelvic floor.

Strengthening your pelvic floor can improve bladder and bowel function. This will allow you to have bowel movements more easily without straining. Straining can put pressure on the rectal and anal veins, irritating hemorrhoids or causing new veins to form.
