(Arthritis) Only in the knees? Can it occur in the hips too?
Just the knees? Arthritis can also occur in the hips.
When people think of arthritis, they often think of knee arthritis and tend to think of it as a disease that only affects the knees. While knee arthritis is common, arthritis can actually affect any joint in the body. The human body has approximately 360 joints, and there are no exceptions. While less common than the knee, hip arthritis can also occur. Arthritis, which causes pain, deformation, and dysfunction due to damage and degenerative changes in the bones and cartilage that make up the joint, can occur anywhere.
◇Hip arthritis and spinal disc problems have similar symptoms, but are completely different diseases.
The hip joint is a joint in the buttocks area, connecting the pelvis to the thighbone. Although its range of motion is narrower than that of the shoulder, it is a crucial joint involved in leg movement, including the thigh and calf, and plays a crucial role in walking.
The causes of hip arthritis are diverse. Increased pressure on the hip joint due to obesity is a known cause of hip joint damage. Poor posture and sedentary lifestyles can also damage the hip joint and surrounding tissues, leading to hip arthritis.
Dr. Seo Jin-hyeok, an orthopedic specialist and head of the Joint Center at Daedong Hospital, said, "Because there is little awareness that arthritis can occur in the hip joint, patients often mistake hip pain for a herniated disc and seek outpatient treatment." Dr. Seo added, "While both can cause hip pain, they are distinctly different conditions. Therefore, it's crucial to receive a diagnosis from an orthopedic specialist to determine the exact location and cause of the pain before beginning treatment." He emphasized, "Damage to the hip joint, which supports our bodies and allows us to walk, can significantly impact our quality of life, so it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly if symptoms appear."
Hip arthritis typically presents with a stiff, uncomfortable sensation in the hip, groin, or thigh upon waking. Pain occurs with movement and improves with rest. This often leads to untreated hip arthritis. If left untreated, hip arthritis can lead to hip joint deformity or worsening inflammation, which can persist even with rest. If the condition worsens and the cartilage wears away completely, bone-on-bone contact can lead to severe pain and limited hip rotation and flexion. Immobilization due to pain can weaken the muscles responsible for joint movement, potentially leading to a limp when walking.
◇Depending on the severity, surgery may be necessary.
Treatment for hip arthritis is not much different from that for arthritis in other areas. In the early stages, treatment includes avoiding excessive hip joint use, rest, and medications such as anti-inflammatory analgesics, heat therapy, and physical therapy. Obese patients should lose weight and maintain joint function under the guidance of a medical professional. Exercises like swimming and stationary cycling, which increase muscle strength, are helpful.
If pain persists despite conservative treatment, surgical treatment may be considered. Dr. Seo Jin-hyeok explained, "In relatively early stages, surgery to remove and fix damaged cartilage and bone tissue can lead to improvement." He added, "In severe cases, joint replacement surgery can restore normal function." He added, "With recent advances in medical technology, there are increasing cases of elderly patients improving gait disturbances and enhancing their life satisfaction through joint replacement surgery."
Meanwhile, to prevent arthritis, including hip arthritis, it's important to manage your weight to avoid obesity, maintain joint range of motion, and strengthen your muscles through appropriate exercise. Avoid repetitive, strenuous movements and poor posture, as these can lead to degenerative changes.
Managing your diet is also important. Avoid salty foods or excessive caffeine intake, as these can lead to calcium loss. Be sure to consume a balanced diet rich in nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K, which have a positive impact on bone density.

Hip joint -> arthritis, this is the first time I've heard of it..
Obesity is our biggest enemy.
Because caffeine can cause calcium loss.
