A study found that regular coffee consumption can help slow down skin aging.
A joint research team from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences studied 16,677 adults enrolled in the UK Biobank to determine the link between beverage consumption and skin aging. Participants completed a questionnaire about their consumption habits for four beverages: coffee, tea, alcohol, and sugary drinks.
The study found that coffee was the only beverage that showed a protective effect against facial skin aging. The anti-aging effect was found to increase with increasing coffee consumption. The research team explained that the polyphenols contained in coffee improve skin elasticity and hydration, helping to delay wrinkles and other signs of aging. Furthermore, the research team explained that caffeine, a key component of coffee, slows skin aging by eliminating damaged keratinocytes and free radicals.
The degree of coffee roasting has also been shown to affect skin aging. Because polyphenols are heat-sensitive, lightly roasted coffee may have a more potent anti-aging effect than darkly roasted coffee.
