Maintaining a clean scalp and hair is an important way to prevent hair loss. However, even if you wash your hair daily, poor pre- and post-shower habits can negatively impact hair loss. What are some of these?

 

◇Wrap a towel around your head

 

Many people spend time with a towel wrapped around their head after washing their hair, citing it as a hassle. They may even go to bed without completely drying their hair. However, wrapping damp hair in a towel can damage the scalp by leaving it in a humid, warm environment. The longer you leave a towel on wet hair, the more bacteria can multiply, increasing the risk of dermatitis. This can also lead to hair loss. After washing your hair, first press the towel firmly to remove any remaining moisture, then dry it with a cool-air dryer. Hot air can damage hair and hair follicles. Keep the towel about 30cm away from your head and dry it with a cool-air dryer.


◇ Take a hot shower

 

When washing your hair, avoid hot water. Hair roots and follicles become more fragile when wet, and washing with hot water can irritate the scalp and lead to hair loss. This is because hot water damages the scalp and disrupts the oil-moisture balance. A study by the University of Miami found that showering with hot water weakened hair follicles due to the heat, increasing the risk of hair loss. Hot water also dries out hair. Hair and scalp are composed of natural oils, and hot water strips these oils and damages keratin (the protein that forms the epithelial tissue). It's best to shower with water no hotter than 42 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) for 10 to 20 minutes.

 

◇Combing wet hair

 

It's best to brush your hair when it's dry. Brushing wet hair can cause hair breakage. Furthermore, vigorously drying wet hair with a towel can cause hair loss, as wet hair stretches and breaks more easily than dry hair. Instead, wrap wet hair in a towel and press firmly to remove excess moisture.

 

◇Wash your hair in the morning

 

Some people wash their hair every morning, but it's actually better to wash it at night. If you go to bed without washing off the impurities that accumulate on your scalp during the day, your pores will become clogged, which is detrimental to your scalp. Washing your hair in the morning also strips away the oils from your scalp, exposing it directly to UV rays. Exposure to UV rays without the oil can damage your scalp, increase the risk of flaking, and lead to hair loss.

      전 아직 탈모는 없는데 머리 숱도 많고
      그런데 보니깐 한순간에 그냥 빠지더라고요
