In the future, the authentication application (app) 'PASS' from the three major telecommunications companies will also enable the mobile driver's license verification service to be used exactly like a physical ID card.

 

By simply taking a photo of your physical driver's license through the app and registering it, you can use it just like an ID card, so you don't need to carry the physical ID.

 

It appears that mobile identification cards are gradually becoming more common, as not only the PASS app but also Samsung Electronics' electronic wallet service, Samsung Wallet, began offering identification services that provide the same validity as physical ID cards starting this year.

 

On the 31st, the three major telecommunications companies—SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus—announced that the 'Mobile Driver's License Verification Service' provided by the Pass app has been granted the same legal effect as a physical driver's license following amendments to the Road Traffic Act.

 

PASS has been providing mobile driver's license verification services since June 2020.

 

 

The amendment to the Road Traffic Act implemented on the 31st explicitly states that when verifying details such as name, photo, address, resident registration number, driver's license number, and issuance information through a driver's license verification service, it shall be deemed that the information has been confirmed using the driver's license.

 

 

 

From now on, when the police request to verify your driver's license, you can use PASS's mobile ID verification service instead of a physical ID.

 

In addition, mobile ID cards have legal validity as official identification for performing tasks at community centers and for various public elections.

 

It can also be used when checking in for domestic flights, and the adult verification process can be replaced with a mobile device when purchasing cigarettes or alcohol at convenience stores.

 

Especially when boarding domestic flights, you can use the Pass app to verify your ID and boarding pass simultaneously by utilizing the 'Pass Smart Ticket'.

 

The advantage is that you do not need to present your ID and boarding pass separately during check-in, and this is supported by seven airlines including Jeju Air, T'way Air, Eastar Jet, Air Seoul, Hi Air, Korean Air, and Jin Air.

 

According to the recently revised National Health Insurance Act, the PASS app can be used for identity verification during medical treatment at hospitals and clinics that is required by health insurance.

 

Until now, it has been possible to register and use driver's licenses and national veteran registration cards through the 'Mobile ID Card' app operated independently by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

 

 

However, in this case, there was the inconvenience of having to visit the driver's license testing center to obtain a mobile driver's license.

 

Now, users can utilize mobile identification cards through frequently used apps on smartphones, such as PASS or Samsung Wallet by Samsung Electronics, significantly improving accessibility and convenience.

 

As of this month, the number of PASS app mobile ID verification service subscribers has exceeded 11 million.

As of March this year, the number of domestic users of Samsung Wallet exceeds 17 million.

 

 

Samsung Electronics rebranded the Galaxy smartphone app wallet platform 'Samsung Pay' to 'Samsung Wallet' in March of this year, and has integrated mobile driver's licenses and mobile national veterans registration cards.

 

 

Both services of Samsung Wallet have the same legal effect as physical ID cards and were also used for voter identification during the 22nd National Assembly election held in April.

 

Mobile ID card services are expected to be available within the year on platforms with many users, such as Naver and Kakao.

 

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety selected Kookmin Bank, Naver, NongHyup Bank, Toss, and Kakao as participating companies for the private opening of mobile identification cards in June.

 

 

 

These companies have begun developing systems to incorporate mobile identification cards and will provide mobile ID services after passing the suitability assessment by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety within this year.

 

 

 

In the case of Naver, it plans to issue and utilize the mobile ID service through the Naver default app, while Kakao plans to add a mobile ID menu within the KakaoTalk 'More' tab and the KakaoBank app.
