In South Korea, where 63% of the land is mountainous, there is virtually no way to completely prevent landslides. Therefore, it is important to recognize signs of landslides and evacuate if necessary.

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 'National Safety Guidelines,' the signs of a landslide are as follows.

Suddenly, a large amount of water gushes out on the slope of the mountain.

▲Spring water or groundwater that usually flows well suddenly stops flowing.

▲If you see a gap like a crack in the mountain ridge, it means that some of the soil that absorbed water has been washed away.

If cracks appear in retaining walls or embankments in residential areas, or if muddy water rises in the drainage ditch in front of them, it can be considered an imminent landslide. However, approaching the retaining wall to check for signs of a landslide is the most dangerous action.

It is not easy for individuals to detect signs of a landslide because it happens very quickly. When a landslide warning (advisory or alert) is issued, it is wise to stay alert and evacuate immediately when an evacuation order is given. Sometimes, residents ignore the evacuation order due to inconvenience, but it is an action that must be guarded against to prevent loss of life from landslides.

When evacuating, turn off gas and electricity to prevent secondary damage. Also, inform residents who have not evacuated about the danger. To facilitate quick evacuation, it is advisable to prepare a bag with basic necessities during heavy rain periods. After evacuating, continuously check for landslide warnings and alerts through the Landslide Information System on a PC or via 'Smart Forest Disasters' on a mobile device.
