Why is secondhand smoke harmful?

Q. Can secondhand smoke cause cancer?

A. Yes, the official report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer also classifies secondhand smoke as a carcinogenic substance. Secondhand smoke is known to cause lung cancer in non-smokers, and in the United States, it has been confirmed that at least 3,000 people die annually from lung cancer due to secondhand smoke. Additionally, according to the official report from the U.S. Public Health Service, simply living with a smoker increases the risk of lung cancer by approximately 20-30%. Furthermore, in adults, the risk of developing breast cancer, nasal cavity cancer, and nasopharyngeal cancer is increased, and in children, the risks of leukemia, lymphoma, and brain tumors are elevated.

Q. What are the diseases other than cancer caused by secondhand smoke?

A. Secondhand smoke is associated with premature death among non-smokers. Inhaling sidestream smoke, which is exposure to secondhand smoke, irritates the airways and adversely affects the cardiovascular system in a short period of time. Additionally, the risk of heart disease, a representative form of coronary artery disease, increases by approximately 25-30%. It is reported that in the United States, about 46,000 deaths annually are attributed to secondhand smoke. Furthermore, the risk of stroke and arterial diseases is also said to be elevated.

Q. Is secondhand smoke worse for children?

Yes, children are more vulnerable to secondhand smoke because their organs and immune systems are not fully developed. If children are exposed to secondhand smoke, they may experience sudden infant death syndrome, otitis media, upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, and worsening of asthma symptoms, and developmental delays are also said to be related.

Q. Why is secondhand smoke considered worse than firsthand smoke?

According to various research findings, the smoke from secondhand smoke contains most of the components found in direct smoking. Therefore, secondhand smoke can cause most health problems that can arise from direct smoking, including lung cancer. Secondhand smoke not only causes discomfort due to cigarette smoke but can also lead to serious health issues such as lung cancer, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. However, secondhand smoke is not necessarily worse than direct smoking. The misconception arises because most of the components in secondhand smoke are sidestream smoke, which has higher concentrations of toxic substances than mainstream smoke. Since direct smokers are exposed to both direct and secondhand smoke, direct smoking is naturally more harmful.

Q. What are secondhand and thirdhand smoke, and how do their risks differ? (Can thirdhand smoke also be dangerous?)

A. Secondhand smoking or indirect smoking refers to exposure to smoke generated while smoking and the smoke exhaled by the smoker. Thirdhand smoking or tertiary indirect smoking refers to exposure to residual tobacco smoke components that remain on surfaces of objects and in dust particles in the air after smoking has ceased, which are then re-emitted into the air. Secondhand smoking increases the risk of lung cancer, stroke, and coronary artery disease in adults, and respiratory diseases such as otitis media, asthma, and impaired lung function, as well as sudden infant death syndrome in children. Unlike secondhand smoking, thirdhand smoking can be inhaled through the mouth, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. Children who spend a lot of time indoors and frequently contact items like carpets, blankets, and curtains are at higher risk of exposure to thirdhand smoke. When parents smoke, the risk of thirdhand smoking increases further through contact with their clothes, hair, and skin. In the case of thirdhand smoking, vaporized components from smoking can be absorbed into walls and surrounding objects and may be re-released into the air over several months. Additionally, some toxic substances found in thirdhand smoke are known to include highly toxic chemicals not detected in first- or secondhand smoke, making it potentially dangerous.

Q. Is secondhand smoke from electronic cigarettes okay?

A. Electronic cigarettes are also harmful to health when exposed to secondhand smoke. Electronic cigarettes produce nicotine, ultrafine particles, volatile organic compounds, and other toxic aerosols. Exposure to these harmful substances can worsen respiratory diseases such as asthma and may negatively impact health, including increasing the risk of stroke and heart disease. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends not using electronic cigarettes indoors. Additionally, even nicotine-free electronic cigarettes have been found to contain harmful substances such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein, which are detrimental to health. Consequently, exposure to secondhand smoke from electronic cigarettes, regardless of whether they contain nicotine, can be harmful to health, and caution should be exercised.

Non-smokers have no reason to be exposed to secondhand smoke.

I don't want to breathe cigarette smoke in public places... ㅠ_ㅠ
