Unsettling resurgence of COVID-19... "There is a possibility of summer outbreaks in our country"

However, based on the pattern of previous years' outbreaks, there is a possibility that COVID-19 could spread during the summer season in our country as well.

On the 23rd, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced that the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients at 221 hospital-level surveillance medical institutions across the country during the 20th week of this year (May 11-17) was 100, showing a decrease compared to the previous week and remaining at a similar level over the past four weeks.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in the country has fluctuated over four weeks, with 127 in week 17, 115 in week 18, 146 in week 19, and 100 in week 20, and these changes are not considered statistically significant.

Although a large-scale outbreak has not yet occurred, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported that individuals aged 65 and older account for 59.3% (1,376 people) of the total hospitalizations this year, highlighting the need for special caution among the elderly.

Currently, in overseas countries such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, the number of COVID-19 patients is increasing.

In the 20th week of this year, Hong Kong reported 977 COVID-19 cases, a slight decrease from 1,042 cases in the previous week, but still higher than the peak level last summer. The number of severe cases, including deaths, increased to 27 from 18 in the previous week.

During the same period, outpatient and emergency room visits in Taiwan due to COVID-19 increased by 91.3%, reaching 19,097 cases compared to the previous week, and in China, the positivity rate of COVID-19 among suspected influenza patients continues to rise.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency stated, "In response to the increase in COVID-19 cases in neighboring countries close to our country, we will continue to monitor domestic and international trends," and urged the public to "follow respiratory infection prevention guidelines such as handwashing and to get vaccinated if they are in high-risk groups."

Vaccination for high-risk groups for COVID-19 will be extended and carried out until the 30th of next month. The target groups are seniors aged 65 and older, immunocompromised individuals over 6 months old, and residents or patients in vulnerable facilities.
