Repeated truck fatalities... Focused crackdown on illegal tinting obstructing visibility

According to Gangwon Police, the number of fatalities from traffic accidents caused by freight trucks and others in the province has increased significantly compared to last year, and all three fatal accidents that occurred in May were caused by freight trucks.

At around 3:15 PM on the 8th, at the Munmak Interchange intersection in Wonju City, a pedestrian in their 60s crossing the crosswalk was hit by a 25-ton dump truck driven by Mr. A, also in his 60s, and died.

The investigation revealed that there was illegal tinting film attached to the lower part of the truck's front windshield.

Attaching tinting film to the lower part of the windshield to hide behaviors such as not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone is considered an illegal attachment, and failure to comply with maintenance orders to remove it may result in criminal charges and penalties.

 

The police focus on cracking down on illegal attachments while also simultaneously enforcing laws against high-risk violations such as pedestrian safety threats and signal violations during left and right turns at intersections, which pose a high risk of fatal accidents.

We also crack down on structural issues of trucks, such as improper loading, poor maintenance, and illegal structural modifications.

We plan to conduct traffic safety education and promotional activities by visiting freight transportation companies and delivering letters to encourage drivers to voluntarily participate in safe driving practices.

A Gangwon police official said, "We will strive to ensure the safety of residents and create a safe Gangwon Province that is empathetic to drivers," and requested active participation from related agencies and truck drivers.
