Three ways to overcome middle-aged 'chronic fatigue'🤔🤔

No matter how much sleep you get, if your body feels heavy and exhausted, you should suspect 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.' One of the causes of chronic fatigue is that cells are unable to produce enough energy, which is related to mitochondria. Mitochondria are the engines of cells, and proper management of them can improve the efficiency of cellular energy production.

There are signaling pathways that activate mitochondria, among which AMPK is important. AMPK is an enzyme that plays a central role in regulating energy metabolism. It is called an energy sensor and is activated when energy is deficient, helping to produce energy. We explore ways to regulate energy homeostasis and overcome chronic fatigue.

 

1️⃣ Eat regularly or practice intermittent fasting

 

When fasting for a long period, AMPK, which maintains energy homeostasis, becomes activated. In particular, small meals or intermittent fasting activate AMPK, maintaining healthy mitochondria and increasing their lifespan.

 

According to a 2017 study by Duke University Medical Center, dietary restriction and AMPK regulate mitochondrial homeostasis. When vitality and immunity decline and chronic fatigue persists, fasting for about 12 hours along with eating less activates AMPK, restores mitochondrial function, and balances energy metabolism.

 

2️⃣ Even if you feel tired, do aerobic exercise

 

Exercise activates AMPK, increasing the number of mitochondria and improving their function to enhance energy production and efficiency. Exercise helps activate mitochondria by increasing oxygen consumption. Recommended exercises include alternating between high-intensity and low-intensity aerobic activities. Walking or running quickly enough to raise your heart rate and cause shortness of breath, along with moderate-paced walking, are beneficial. Additionally, swimming, cycling, and Pilates are also helpful.

 

Consume antioxidant foods.

 

Antioxidants restore mitochondrial function and eliminate accumulated reactive oxygen species. They are second only to rest in importance. It is effective to consume antioxidant foods that activate AMPK to maintain healthy mitochondria.

 

Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant abundant in fruits, nuts, and wine. It activates AMPK, helping to regulate energy metabolism. Additionally, catechin is a type of polyphenol found in green tea and chocolate. It activates AMPK, increasing fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis.
