Research has shown that based on the analysis of beer yeast, new cancer treatment methods can be developed. Beer yeast is a microorganism used in brewing beer and is a type of fungus. The dividing yeast (S. pombe) used in the study is similar to human cells, allowing for an understanding of the basic cellular processes of normal and cancer cells.

 

A joint research team from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in the United States and EMBL in Germany analyzed dividing yeast cells using a single-particle cryo-electron microscope and cryo-electron tomography. The analysis revealed that when yeast cells enter a dormant state, mitochondria are enveloped by ribosomes.

 

Mitochondria are organelles within cells that produce energy for cellular activities, and ribosomes are organelles responsible for protein synthesis. It is analyzed that ribosomes protect mitochondria and are involved in mitochondrial signaling, regulating the cell's entry into dormancy and awakening.

Dr. Ahmad Joma, who led the research, said, "When cells are placed in difficult situations such as nutrient deficiency, they enter a dormant state to survive. If this dormant state persists for a long time, the cells eventually begin to digest themselves and break down, so mitochondria regulate energy to properly wake up from dormancy."

 

 

Cancer cells also enter a dormant state until the appropriate environment is established in conditions unsuitable for proliferation, and then they either resume proliferation or metastasize elsewhere once the conditions are met. Therefore, based on the interaction between mitochondria and ribosomes, it is analyzed that the secret to how cancer cells enter dormancy and awaken again can be deciphered.

 

Dr. Makie Gluck, who participated in the research, said, "Cancer cells often enter a dormant state to evade detection by the immune system," and "Understanding the dormancy process of cancer cells can lead to the discovery of new markers for tracking dormant cancer cells by the immune system."

 

The research team plans to conduct further studies by analyzing yeast and cultured cancer cells to better understand cancer and to find innovative treatment methods.
