Sometimes, I feel a sudden twisting or cramping sensation in my toes, accompanied by pain. What causes this type of muscle cramp, commonly referred to as a "charley horse"?

First, it may be a sign of insufficient fluid intake. When the body is dehydrated, blood may not flow adequately to the extremities, such as the feet, leading to cramps.

Caused by dehydration, electrolyte deficiency, or excessive muscle use

Consuming essential minerals such as potassium and sodium is also important. Even if the electrolytes obtained through this become deficient, muscles can contract or tremble.

Cramps can also occur when choosing inappropriate shoes. Wearing high heels causes the toes to work harder than usual to maintain balance.

Wearing tight shoes increases the burden on the toes, which can lead to foot cramps and pain.

Among exercise enthusiasts, there are people who frequently experience toe cramps. Excessive use of muscles causes cramping in the toes, feet, and calves.

Age is also a factor. As people get older, they tend to do less stretching and physical activity, leading to muscle tightness, which can cause cramps if suddenly used.

How can I prevent toe cramps? You should minimize activities that put stress on your feet. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes with low heels that provide stable support for the arches of your feet.

Adequate hydration is also necessary. Especially for those who enjoy exercising, it is important to drink water frequently during exercise to replenish fluids.

If you are following a low-salt or salt-free diet for reasons such as dieting, it is necessary to check whether your sodium intake is too low. The same applies when potassium intake is insufficient due to low-calorie diets. Adding foods rich in potassium, such as bananas and almonds, to your diet can help prevent cramps.

Rolling a ball with the sole of the foot or soaking in warm water can help alleviate.

What are some ways to relieve toe cramps? If there is a tennis ball nearby, you can roll it under your foot to relax the muscles.

If there is no small ball, bend the toes in the opposite direction of muscle contraction to help relax. When pain persists, soaking the foot in warm water or applying a warm pack can help alleviate the discomfort.

Varicose veins, herniated discs, diabetes, thyroid diseases, and other medical conditions can cause foot cramps. If there are no particular issues with diet, exercise, or other lifestyle habits, it is necessary to check with your doctor whether these conditions might be the cause of toe cramps.

According to experts, during hot weather like today, physical activities performed in high-temperature environments can lead to muscle cramps. Since the heatwave arrived earlier this year, the effects of high temperature and humidity may be more pronounced than in previous years. It is important to take breaks during physical activity and pay more attention to hydration.

I especially tend to experience this often while sleeping.

Dehydration?

It is said that people drink a lot of water during normal times.

I should also replenish my fluids with vegetables rather than just water.
