Most domestic bathrooms also serve as toilets. The bathtub, sink, and toilet are all located in the same space. It's common to hang your toothbrush near the sink after brushing your teeth, but this is unsanitary for a reason.

When you flush a toilet, bacteria spreads into the air. Toothbrushes stored in the same space as the toilet are easily contaminated. This is confirmed by a study published in the Indian Journal of Dental Research. Twenty toothbrushes stored in bathrooms with toilets and 20 in bathrooms without toilets were tested for bristles contamination. Staphylococcus aureus and S. mutans were detected only in the toothbrushes stored in the bathroom with a toilet after just one month of use. E. coli was also detected three months later.

After using your toothbrush, it's best to leave it outside the bathroom. Bacteria and mold thrive in damp, damp environments. Storing your toothbrush in an enclosed space like a bathroom drawer is not recommended. Keeping it near a well-ventilated window, even if it's inconvenient, is preferable. If you insist on keeping your toothbrush in the bathroom, place it as far away from the toilet as possible. You can also use a toothbrush sterilizer. Keep in mind that sterilizers can also harbor bacteria if left unused, so clean them regularly.

It's also a good idea to sterilize your toothbrush bristles with hot water before brushing. Rinse the bristles in the hottest water from the faucet for about 30 seconds. This helps remove some bacteria that can't be seen with the naked eye. After brushing, use a clean finger to spread the bristles apart and remove any debris caught between the bristles under running water. Finally, rinse the bristles under hot water for 30 seconds.

Meanwhile, storing multiple toothbrushes on one toothbrush is also not a good idea. If the bristles touch each other, there's a risk of cross-contamination. Cross-contamination occurs when microorganisms from one toothbrush are transferred to another. When storing multiple toothbrushes, keep them at least 5cm apart to prevent the bristles from touching each other.

Storing your toothbrush and toothpaste is also important.

I guess it's much better to keep it outside the bathroom.

How to use a sterilizer

They say it's okay to soak your mouth in gargle solution for about 30 seconds.
