I am worried about my health checkup results due to high cholesterol levels.

I recently had a health checkup and had my blood drawn. The results were so bad that I have been feeling depressed all day. It's because of my high cholesterol levels. I don't have fatty liver, and my protein levels are okay, but they say I should take medication because of the high cholesterol. I am very depressed. I'm not at an age where I need to worry about vascular disease yet. However, my high cholesterol levels have been present since my early twenties. I heard that genetics might play a role, could that be why?? My mother also has high cholesterol and takes medication. What should I do?? I'm afraid I might develop a serious illness if I continue like this.
