Research has shown that sleeping in the socks worn all day after returning home can be harmful to health.
On the 13th (local time), according to the Cleveland Sleep Clinic in the United States, sleeping with socks on causes blood vessels to dilate and blood flow to improve, helping to maintain body temperature at an optimal level. It is especially effective in winter, and keeping the feet warm shortens the time it takes to fall asleep and increases the likelihood of deep sleep.
However, sleeping all day in socks worn outside is found to be unhygienic.
According to a recent survey conducted by a mattress company in the UK targeting 1,130 Reddit users, only 30% of people who wear socks to bed wear clean socks.
Analysis of the microbial content of eight pairs of socks worn for a day revealed that the socks contained 20 times more bacteria than a toilet bowl.
This was found to be more contaminated than a typical TV remote control, with bacteria such as dust mites, mold, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa that can cause infections.
In 25% of the socks, bacteria related to excrement were also found. The research team explained that such contamination is likely caused by environmental factors such as walking barefoot indoors or cockroach feces.
Experts recommended wearing clean socks to bed for hygiene, wearing indoor slippers at home to prevent sock contamination, and washing bed sheets frequently.
Meanwhile, wearing clean socks while sleeping can be beneficial for health. Usually, body temperature drops before falling asleep, and people with cold hands and feet may take longer to fall asleep because of this.
Therefore, for people with cold bodies, wearing clean socks can be a way to achieve better sleep. It has been found that people who wear socks fall asleep 7.5 minutes faster and sleep 32 minutes longer.
