As you age, wrinkles appear not only on the face but also on the backs of the hands and the neck. While this is a natural aging process, wrinkles on the backs of the hands and neck can make you look older than your actual age. We explored ways to prevent wrinkles on the backs of the hands and the neck.

 

◇Back of the hand and neck, exposed areas prone to wrinkles

 

The back of the hand has few sebaceous glands and therefore has little natural moisturizing ability. Compared to other areas, it is exposed to the outside for longer periods and attracts more pollutants, leading to faster skin aging. However, neglecting proper care can easily result in the formation of wrinkles. The same applies to neck wrinkles.

 

The skin surrounding the neck easily develops wrinkles even with mild stimulation. It is about two-thirds thinner than facial skin, making it more prone to wrinkles from gentle stimuli. The neck has fewer sebaceous glands compared to the face, making it easily dry. As a result, the skin surface becomes rough, leading to the formation of wrinkles. Especially, the neck is an area that moves frequently. Since there are almost no muscles that support the skin in the neck, wrinkles tend to sag easily. However, most people neglect neck skin care because they believe that trouble or skin issues rarely occur in the neck.


◇You can prevent wrinkles just by paying attention to your cleansing habits

 

Wrinkles can be prevented simply by changing your lifestyle habits. First and foremost, applying sunscreen to the neck and hands is the most important. Ultraviolet rays destroy elastin and collagen, which are called elastic fibers, accelerating skin aging. Therefore, sunscreen should be applied not only to the face but also to the neck and the back of the hands without fail. If dryness is felt on the neck and the back of the hands, removing dead skin with a pack once or twice a week and massaging can also be helpful.

 

Regular facial cleansing habits also affect wrinkles on the neck and the back of the hands. The neck is an area exposed along with the face, but it is often overlooked during cleansing. The neck should be washed thoroughly with lukewarm water that is not hot. While it is important to remove impurities, excessively high temperatures can cause dryness.

 

If you have applied makeup up to the upper part of your neck, you should thoroughly cleanse to remove all residue of cosmetics. Also, when washing, you should wipe from bottom to top to prevent neck wrinkles. After washing your face, apply moisturizer and nourishing cream not only to your face but also to your neck. When applying moisturizing products, do so by gently sweeping upward, just like when washing your face.

 

Maintain hand cleanliness and moisture. Washing hands too frequently or with hot water can easily cause dryness and wrinkles. Rubbing vigorously with a towel when hands become rough may also increase the risk of more wrinkles, as the stratum corneum is destroyed, leading to skin dryness. When applying moisturizer, generously cover the nails, the back of the hands, and the upper parts of the wrists. Pressing firmly between the fingers can promote blood circulation and enhance skin elasticity. Actions such as counting with fingers, playing the piano, or frequently shaking hands also help improve hand skin elasticity.
