- It is a national holiday established to raise awareness of the Japanese military 'comfort women' issue both domestically and internationally, and to honor the victims of the Japanese military 'comfort women.' It is observed annually on August 14th. In December 2017, an amendment to the 'Act on the Protection, Support, and Commemoration of Victims of the Japanese Military 'Comfort Women'' was passed, officially designating the previously civilian-led 'Comfort Women Victims Memorial Day' as a national holiday.
