The researchers stated that engaging in moderate to vigorous activity for 30 minutes and sleeping more than 6 hours at night can improve cognitive abilities the next day.

 

He said, "The conclusion is that physical activity is good for the brain and that good sleep helps with this."

 

The research team paid attention to previous studies that suggested physical activity is related to short-term improvements in cognitive function and a reduction in the risk of dementia. However, many studies investigating short-term effects were conducted in laboratories and mainly tracked responses over a few minutes to several hours. These studies indicated that there could be benefits from increased blood flow to the brain and stimulation of chemicals known as neurotransmitters.

 

It was found that for every 30-minute increase in sitting time, there was a slight decrease in working memory scores the next day. Additionally, people who slept more than six hours at night had higher scores in episodic memory, attention, and physical response speed the following day compared to those who slept less.

 

This study focuses on protecting the brains of aging individuals. Bloomberg researcher pointed out, "We all experience cognitive decline as we age, which is a normal part of aging," and added, "Therefore, it is also an age group to consider what small daily activities can be done to improve cognitive function, independence, and social participation."
