Definition
Presbyopia refers to the condition where the ability to focus on objects close by diminishes with age. This is not a disease but a visual impairment caused by the aging of the lens. If presbyopia is not corrected with glasses or contact lenses, it can cause discomfort in daily life.
Cause
Presbyopia occurs as the eye's ability to focus decreases with age. When young, the ciliary muscle and lens are highly elastic, allowing clear vision of nearby objects. However, as one ages and the elasticity of the lens diminishes, distant objects remain clear while close objects appear blurry.
Symptoms
When presbyopia occurs, the lens's focus adjustment slows down when viewing distant and close objects, causing nearby objects to appear blurry. In dark environments, reading a book or looking at small text easily causes eye fatigue and headaches. Objects far away are seen clearly.
Diagnosis
Presbyopia can be diagnosed through visual acuity tests and refraction tests.
