Household chores, women take on 60% more ๐ฑ๐ฑ... 'Mental burden ๐ฎโ๐จ๐ฎโ๐จ' also affects the workplace
A study has shown that mothers bear 71% of the mental burden experienced within a household.
ย
Mental burden, also called "cognitive household labor," refers to the thought processes necessary for smooth family life. It includes managing schedules, planning, and organizing tasks.
ย
A joint research team from the University of Bath in the UK and the University of Melbourne in Australia analyzed data from 3,000 parents residing in the United States to examine gender differences in mental burden within the household.
ย
According to the research, mothers were responsible for 7 out of 10 (71%) mental burden tasks at home. These include meal planning, activity scheduling, and household financial management. In contrast, fathers handled only 45%. Mothers' household chores burden was 60% higher than that of fathers.
ย
This imbalance was found to occur throughout the year. The mother took on 79% of daily tasks such as cleaning and childcare, more than twice as much as the father (37%). Meanwhile, the father focused on temporary tasks such as finances or home repairs (65%). However, the mother's share in this area was also relatively high at 53%, indicating overlapping efforts.
ย
According to the study, fathers tended to overestimate their roles. While both sides often overestimate their contributions, this tendency was more prevalent among fathers.
ย
The gender gap in mental burden also affected women's work lives. According to a recent Gallup survey, working mothers were twice as likely as fathers to consider reducing their working hours or leaving their jobs. This was due to parental responsibilities.
ย
Research author Dr. Ana Catalano Weeks said, "Mental burden at home can lead to stress and burnout," and emphasized, "We should talk about who bears more mental burden at home and work together to reduce daily stress."
ย
This study was recently published in the international journal "Journal of Marriage and Family."
