(Concern) Symptoms of reflux esophagitis include dry cough
◇Main symptoms are... heartburn, chest pain, dry cough
The most common symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease include heartburn, a persistent sensation of foreign material in the throat, chest pain, and dry cough. Additionally, persistent bad breath despite frequent brushing and excessive belching are also symptoms caused by stomach acid reflux.
◇ Risk of developing esophageal cancer if neglected
If reflux esophagitis is left untreated, various complications can occur. Ulcers may develop, and rarely, esophageal strictures can form. The particularly concerning complication is Barrett's esophagus. Due to continuous exposure to stomach acid, the squamous epithelium of the lower esophagus becomes inflamed and transforms into gastric mucosal cells, a condition known as Barrett's esophagus, which increases the risk of esophageal and stomach cancers. Barrett's esophagus is also classified as a precancerous stage of esophageal cancer. Therefore, if you experience symptoms of reflux esophagitis, prompt diagnosis and treatment are necessary.
