The interpretation of syphilis test results can be divided into two types of tests.

-
Vitreous body test (RPR, VDRL)
-
-
This test is an indirect screening for syphilis infection.
-
The higher the number, the more likely it is to be an infection.
-
If the result is negative (-), it means there is no current syphilis infection.
-
If the result is positive (+), there is a possibility of infection, so additional tests are necessary.

-
Treponemal tests (FTA-ABS, TPPA)
-
-
This test directly detects antibodies to the syphilis bacteria.
-
If it is positive (+), there is a possibility of current or past syphilis infection.
-
If the result is negative (-), it can be interpreted as not infected.
If both tests come back positive, syphilis infection can be confirmed, and appropriate treatment is necessary.
