To prevent life-threatening cardiovascular diseases like stroke and myocardial infarction, it's crucial to maintain healthy blood vessels. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to every tissue and cell in the body, while also removing accumulated waste. When blood becomes cloudy and sticky, it can lead to clots, narrowing or even blocking blood vessels. Frequent consumption of processed meats, refined grains, and foods high in trans fats are known to contribute to blood clouding. So, what foods can purify the blood?

 

◇Seaweed

Wakame contains many blood-purifying ingredients, such as fucoidan and alginic acid. Fucoidan, a dietary fiber found in seaweed, helps prevent blood clots and purifies the blood. Alginic acid, a soluble fiber found in wakame, helps excrete bad cholesterol and triglycerides. This helps prevent dyslipidemia (a condition caused by excessive lipids or fats in the blood) and arteriosclerosis (a condition caused by thickening and hardening of the arteries). However, raw wakame is high in sodium, so it's best to soak it in water before cooking to remove the saltiness.

◇Seafood

Consuming seafood rich in taurine, such as clams, oysters, and tuna, is also beneficial. Taurine is also well-known as an ingredient in fatigue-reducing supplements. It suppresses the sympathetic nervous system, which raises blood pressure, and helps the heart pump blood. In fact, taurine is used to treat heart failure, a leading cause of heart attacks. This is due to its properties of promoting blood flow through the heart and stabilizing blood pressure.

Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in blue-backed fish like mackerel and tuna, are beneficial for blood health. Omega-3 fatty acids lower blood triglyceride levels and prevent blood clots. Fish oil, in particular, helps repair damaged blood vessels by preventing vasodilation and inflammation.

 

◇Wake

The sesaminol and sesamin components in sesame seeds help keep the blood clean. A high-fat diet can cause cholesterol to build up in the blood, narrowing blood vessels. Sesaminol removes cholesterol and protects blood vessels. Sesamin lowers blood cholesterol levels by blocking cholesterol absorption in the small intestine and promoting its excretion. However, sesame seeds are high in calories, so it's best to limit your daily intake to a large spoonful of about 10g.

 

◇Citrus fruits It's also beneficial to increase your intake of tangerines, lemons, and oranges. The potassium found in these fruits helps flush out excess sodium from the body, preventing rapid increases in blood pressure. In particular, the citric acid that gives tangerines their tart flavor helps filter waste from the blood, and the vitamin P found in the white fiber inside the peel strengthens capillaries. Citrus fruits are best absorbed by the body when consumed without added sugar or other ingredients. One cup of juice per day is recommended.
