Are diabetes and cataracts really related?

My husband's family has a history of diabetes. My brother-in-law also passed away due to diabetes complications.

My husband has also been diagnosed with diabetes and is taking medication. I heard that diabetic complications often first appear in the eyes, and lately, when I look at my husband's pupils, I see a shape that looks like cataracts. He often says that his vision has suddenly worsened, so I am very worried. He really dislikes going to the hospital, so it's very difficult to get him to go.

 

 

What is diabetic cataract?

Symptoms of loss of transparency in the lens include corneal clouding and clear vision of objects, which differ from typical visual impairment.

Diabetes is a condition in which the necessary insulin for the body is not produced properly, and when diabetic patients show symptoms of cataracts, the clouding of the lens is said to worsen.

 

 

Why is treatment for diabetic cataracts important?

There is a high likelihood that diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes, will develop, and if circulatory disorders worsen, macular edema and bleeding in the vitreous may occur, leading to a sudden deterioration of vision.

Therefore, it is recommended that diabetic patients regularly visit an ophthalmologist for check-ups.

 

 

Diabetic cataracts progress quickly and can become dangerous, so if you are a diabetic patient and your age falls within the appropriate management range, you should undergo regular retinal examinations.
