If you're worried about hair loss, no matter how healthy it is, you should avoid 'this diet'.
 

Research has shown that intermittent fasting suppresses hair growth and causes hair loss.

 

Intermittent fasting is a dietary method where you eat within a set time period and restrict food intake outside of that time. The 8:16 fasting method, which involves eating for 8 hours and fasting for the remaining 16 hours, is popular. Many studies have shown that it has positive effects on metabolism, weight management, and overall health, establishing it as a health trend.

 

The research team at West Lake University in China divided shaved mice into three groups to investigate the effects of various forms of intermittent fasting on hair growth. The three groups consisted of an intermittent fasting group that ate for 8 hours daily and fasted for 16 hours, a group that ate every other day, and a control group with access to food for 24 hours.

According to the research findings, the control group mice that could eat without any restrictions had most of their hair grown back after 30 days, whereas the intermittent fasting groups of 8-16 hours and alternate-day fasting only showed partial hair regrowth after 96 days. An analysis of the effects of intermittent fasting on hair follicle stem cells was also conducted.

 

The control group mice maintained their hair follicles from day 20 after shaving, as hair follicle stem cells became active. However, in mice subjected to intermittent fasting and alternate-day fasting, cell death occurred in the hair follicle stem cells during the fasting periods. The research team explained that this is because reactive oxygen species accumulated during intermittent fasting induce cell death in hair follicle stem cells.

 

The research team conducted the same experiment over 10 days with 49 adult men and women to see if these results also apply to humans. As a result, the hair growth rate of the intermittent fasting group, who fasted for 18 hours a day, was found to be 18% slower than that of the control group.

 

Research author Professor Bing Zhang said, "It is also important to recognize that intermittent fasting can lead to unintended consequences."
