Video footage of a mysterious creature spotted along the Han River has gone viral. Is it real or just a hoax?
Han River monster, what's causing all the fuss lately?
A video recently posted on the YouTube channel "Jeongdam Story" shows a gigantic, 6-10 meter long creature swimming along the Han River in Yeouido, Seoul, garnering significant attention. The YouTuber in the video reportedly reacts with surprise when he sees the object suddenly appear while night fishing, exclaiming, "It's coming that way!"
The creatures were seen swimming in the same location for about 20 minutes, and even appeared to be two of them together. The size of the objects is estimated to be between 6 meters and 10 meters.
How do experts rate it?
Many officials and researchers are very skeptical about the identity of the 'monster creature'.
Choi Hyun-ki, a researcher at the National Institute of Biological Resources, said the possibility of an anaconda or crocodile was highly unlikely. This is because there are no known cases of anacondas or crocodiles living or being abandoned in Korea, and the related surveillance system is thorough.
Meanwhile, it was explained that it was likely that a group of otters were swimming together, making the object appear large. This analysis suggests that this possibility is high, as otters are known to inhabit Bamseom Island near Yeouido.
Professor Kim Dong-geon of Samyuk University said, "There's a possibility that it was a large fish, and the size may have been exaggerated." He also pointed out that the Han River is mostly shallow, making it difficult for large new species to exist in its ecosystem.
Seoul city officials also said that the possibility of strange creatures living there is low, and that a recent fish species survey revealed no unusual findings.
Is the Han River monster real?
The Han River is shallow and has large seasonal changes in water temperature and quality, making it difficult for large organisms to survive.
In 2022, a video of a “10-meter-tall monster” was also circulated, but upon confirmation, it was found that it was likely a buoy or floating object shaking on the water.
There are also occasional cases of abandoned pet pythons, lizards, and crocodiles, but experts say the video in question is unlikely to be one of those cases.
In conclusion
The “Han River monster” quickly became a hot topic on social media and YouTube, but most of the reports are likely misinterpretations, and even experts do not acknowledge the existence of the new creature.
While this is certainly an interesting and mystical story, it's important to remember that until scientific analysis and factual confirmation are available, it will likely remain speculation.
