A study found that an online weight management program was effective in helping middle-aged women who were overweight or obese lose weight.
Being overweight or obese can lead to serious health problems, including an increased risk of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
A research team at the University of Missouri-Columbia conducted a meta-analysis of studies from 2000 to 2019 to compare the effectiveness of weight loss methods for middle-aged adults with overweight or obesity. The analysis included studies targeting middle-aged adults (ages 35-55) with overweight or obesity who participated in online weight management programs for at least six months.
The analysis revealed that specific features of online weight management programs were effective in promoting long-term weight loss and maintenance in middle-aged adults. The average methodological quality score of the 29 weight management programs evaluated by the research team was 12.1 points. The average methodological quality score is assessed based on weight management intervention features, effectiveness, and other factors, and is out of a total of 16 points.
Among online weight management programs, programs that included ▲educational information and self-monitoring functions ▲group chat functions to share one's weight management status ▲question-and-answer functions with professional health coaches about weight management were particularly effective.
“We need to choose an effective online weight management program to address obesity, a health problem that threatens the health of middle-aged people,” said Dr. Yoo Man-soo, who led the study.
