A study has shown that an online weight management program is effective for middle-aged women who are overweight or obese.
Being overweight or obese leads to serious health problems, including an increased risk of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
A research team from the University of Missouri-Columbia in the United States conducted a meta-analysis of studies from 2000 to 2019 to compare the effectiveness of weight loss methods for middle-aged adults with overweight or obesity. The studies analyzed involved middle-aged adults (ages 35-55) with overweight or obesity who participated in online weight management programs for at least six months.
Analysis results showed that certain features of online weight management were effective for long-term weight loss and maintenance in middle-aged individuals. The research team evaluated a total of 29 weight management programs, with an average methodological quality score of 12.1 points. The average methodological quality score is assessed based on weight management intervention features, effectiveness, etc., with a total of 16 points possible.
During online weight management, programs that include ▲educational information and self-monitoring features, ▲group chat functions to share one's weight management status, and ▲Q&A features with professional health coaches were particularly effective.
Dr. Yoo Man-soo, who led the research, said, "We need to choose effective online weight management programs and work to address obesity, a health issue that threatens middle-aged health."
