Will the acne ointment from the pharmacy be effective?

I've been getting constant breakouts lately, so I'm looking for a way to manage them. I'm considering trying an over-the-counter acne ointment before visiting a dermatologist. There are so many types with different ingredients that I'm not sure which one to choose.

I tend to get recurring acne ranging from mild to severe, and I am wondering if I can get sufficient results using only pharmacy ointments.

If anyone has actually used these products, I would appreciate it if you could let me know which ones were good and what precautions I should take while using them.
