Mosquito repellent, effectiveness may vary depending on the product

Some mosquito repellents available on the market may have little to no effectiveness, so caution is advised when choosing a product.

Mosquito repellents do not have insecticidal effects, but they block access by using ingredients that mosquitoes dislike. There are aerosol sprays, lotions, gels, and other forms. They can be applied thinly on exposed skin areas such as the neck, arms, and legs, or on clothing, socks, and shoes by spraying or spreading.

Since it may irritate the skin, it should not be used on underwear, around the eyes and mouth, wounds or inflamed areas, or heavily sunburned skin, and it is recommended to use it in a well-ventilated area rather than a confined space for respiratory health.

Mosquito repellents typically last for 4 to 5 hours, and using an excessive amount beyond the recommended dose may cause side effects.

Bracelet and sticker-type products sold on online shopping malls or ultrasonic repellents are likely to have little to no effect in preventing mosquito access.

Currently, there are no bracelet or sticker-type mosquito repellents approved by the Korea Food and Drug Administration. In other words, bracelet and sticker products sold on the market are not considered mosquito repellents. Most of these products contain scents derived from natural plants such as citronella and eucalyptus.

If there is a mosquito repellent label on this type of product, it is highly likely to be false or exaggerated advertising, so it is recommended not to purchase it.

Ultrasound mosquito repellent devices are the same. These products are based on the assumption that mosquitoes will avoid ultrasound because it mimics the sound of their natural predator, the bat. However, mosquitoes do not have sensory organs capable of detecting such ultrasound. In other words, they are ineffective.

If you want to purchase mosquito repellent, you should check for the label 'quasi-drug.' Among the main ingredients of mosquito repellent, DEET (N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide) is highly effective and long-lasting, making it suitable for outdoor activities such as camping or hiking.

For infants, young children, and pregnant women, it is recommended to choose products containing ingredients such as Icaridin or Ethyl Butyl Acetylaminopropionate, which are relatively less irritating.

If you use mosquito repellent together with sunscreen, it is better to apply the sunscreen first and allow it to absorb fully before using the repellent. Using the mosquito repellent first may reduce its effectiveness due to the smell of the sunscreen.
